Overview
GRACE VYCOR™ ULTRA™ butyl roofing underlayment is engineered with a 100% butyl rubber adhesive and a layer of high-density cross-laminated polyethylene film, resulting in a product that is 30 mils (0.76 mm) thick, providing ease of handling and application. The robust adhesive formulation ensures exceptional adhesion to the roof deck, creating high-quality laps, an effective seal around roofing fasteners, and unparalleled stability at high temperatures. The release liner, designed to safeguard the adhesive, can be easily removed, allowing for a secure bond to the roof deck. This membrane is available in rolls measuring 70 ft (21.3 m) in length and 34 in. (864 mm) in width.
GRACE VYCOR™ ULTRA™ membrane is specifically designed to withstand extreme temperatures for extended periods. It is a reliable choice for sloped roof underlayment, offering protection against water accumulation behind ice dams and wind-driven rain. Additionally, it is recommended for use under certain types of metal...See More roofs, especially those utilizing materials like copper, zinc, or COR-TEN panels, which can conduct heat to the underlayment. Factors such as climate, elevation, roof slope, color, roof covering material, ventilation, and insulated roof decks impact membrane service temperature requirements. Therefore, contractors and specifiers must determine the appropriate level of performance based on these guidelines.
For wind-driven rain protection, applying GRACE VYCOR™ ULTRA™ underlayment beneath the sloped roof covering is highly recommended. This ensures that rain driven by stormy winds does not penetrate the structure, preventing leaks and interior damage. Proper ventilation must be incorporated into the roof construction in full coverage applications due to the membrane's vapor barrier properties. Additionally, for ice dam protection, the membrane should be adhered at the edge of the roof deck by the eaves, extending to a point above the highest anticipated ice dam. Factors like climate, slope, overhang, valleys, insulation, ventilation, and sun exposure influence ice dam height and required membrane coverage.
To ensure proper installation, GRACE VYCOR™ ULTRA™ membrane should be applied on a clean, dry, continuous structural deck. Suitable deck materials include plywood, wood composition, wood plank, metal, concrete, or gypsum sheathing. Dust, dirt, loose nails, and old roofing materials should be removed, and protrusions from the deck must be addressed. Decks should be free from voids, damage, or unsupported areas. For specific substrates, consult the local CertainTeed Applied Technologies sales representative. Priming with PERM-A-BARRIER WB PRIMER may be necessary based on adhesion performance. Membrane application should occur in fair weather with appropriate temperature conditions for the air, roof deck, and membrane. The installation process involves cutting the membrane into manageable lengths, securing the end, peeling back the release liner, and pressing the membrane in place. Proper overlaps, side laps, and end laps must be maintained. Roof coverings should be installed at suitable temperatures, and smooth shank, electroplated galvanized nails are recommended for fastening shingles.
GRACE VYCOR™ ULTRA™ underlayment is an effective solution for extreme temperature roofing assemblies, providing exceptional heat resistance with its specialized butyl adhesive formulation. Its advanced features, including superior adhesion, reliable sealing around fasteners, and high-quality laps, make it a versatile choice for various roofing applications. Additionally, the product's comprehensive support and expertise from the makers of GRACE VYCOR™ ICE & WATER SHIELD ensure a smooth and successful application process. See Less
